CASTELLO SAN SALVATORE

THE HISTORY

San Salvatore Castle was built by the Collalto family in the late 13th century. The castle and its majestic walls are clearly outlined against the Pre-Alps landscape, a strategic location to control the fords along the Piave River, and dominate the village of Susegana and the Veneto plain as far away as the Lagoon. Originally a medieval fortress, San Salvatore Castle was gradually transformed into a noble mansion during the Renaissance. Over the three centuries known as the “Pax Veneta”, the climax of the Republic of Venice, the castle was an international center of culture and power and the Collalto Counts hosted painters, poets, musicians and men of letters who enriched the premises with their art. Aspiring to be elected the next doge, Count Odoardo had a splendid Venetian-style palace built inside the castle in the 18th century. The buildings were heavily damaged by bombing during WWI. Today, after thorough restoration, the castle offers all of the charm of centuries past, and its historical gardens are a wonderful setting for guided tours, receptions and cultural events.
