GIANBATTISTA TIEPOLO BIOGRAPHY

Giambattista Tiepolo was born in Venice in 1696.
At the age of fourteen he started his first artistic experience in the workshop of the painter Gregorio Lazzarini, who taught him painting techniques, drawing and the study of ancient and contemporary artists.
In 1717 he abandoned his Master’s workshop to begin his own artistic career, dedicating himself to the Frescoes of Palazzo Sandi-Porto in Venice.
Here Tiepolo develops his artistic signature, mainly using oil colour techniques and very dark shades, under the key influence of the artist Piazzetta.

Subsequently in 1730, thanks to the Master Paolo Veronese, Tiepolo abandoned the shadowy colour to enhance the brilliant one.
His first artpiece was The Coronation of Mary, a work kept hidden from the public, painted for the Parish Church of Biadene in 1716.
In 1722, Tiepolo went to Vascon, in the province of Treviso, to paint the Glory of Saint Lucy.

Here he stayed for four days until the completion of the work, but he later returned to begin the second great Fresco of the central nave “The Trinity”, which will be later finished by his son Giandomenico or perhaps by some of his pupils.
Having reached the peak of his fame and wealth, the artist traveled with his children to Madrid, invited by the King of Spain to fresco the Throne Palace and two other rooms.
Gianbattista Tiepolo died in Madrid in 1770.
