BAPTISM OF CHRIST WITH THE SAINTS JOHN BAPTIST, FRANCESCO D’ASSISI AND ANTONIO DA PADOVA

Opera Text

Inside the Church of S. Giovanni Battista in Vittorio Veneto, more precisely, in the apse of an optagonal shape, there is the altarpiece by Francesco da Milano “The Baptism of Christ with Saints John the Baptist, Francis of Assisi and Anthony of Padua “, Dating back to 1529. In a document of Ludwig of 1911, Francesco da Milano becomes obliged to the friars of the Convent of S. Giovanni Battista di Serravalle to complete the altarpiece for their church by 1530. The document also indicates what the subject of the altar should be: in the lower part Giovanni Battista baptizes Christ with S. Francesco on his right and S. Antonio da Padova on the left. For each figure the document repeats that it must be painted standing. In the upper part must be represented God the Father in the half-length clouds and between him and his son “is depicted a Spirit Sancto in the form of Columba”. The landscape will have to be “convenient to it shovel”.
