Dante’s Paradise book makes reference to this bridge “Là dove Sile e Cagnan s’accompagna” (Over there where the Sile and The Cagnan keep each other company). The bridge was built right where the waters of the two rivers meet. The clear water is from the Sile river and the muddy water from the Cagnan. Until 1865 it was called Bridge of the Impossible due to the many problems faced during its construction. Later, it was named the Greatest Poet bridge. These banks belonged to the “squeri” (boatyards in which the boats are fixed or built) used for commerce with Venice.
