FIRST REPRESENTATION OF A MAN WITH GLASSES
Opera Text
The artist Tomaso da Modena was the first to represent a man with glasses. We are talking about Cardinal Hugues de Saint-Cher, born in 1200, century in which eyewear appeared for the first time.  The glasses are reproduced in the smallest details including the pin that holds them on the nose and allows them to be closed. The portrait is found in the Sala del Capitolo, in the Church of San Nicolò in Treviso and dates back to 1532. It is part of a large fresco containing more than 40 portraits of cardinals intent on reading or studying.
