This is located in the heart of the historic centre, a crossroads for a relaxing walk. From here you can window shop around the colourful stores under the long portico. This square is always busy, don’t miss the chance to stop at any of the cafes to taste some traditional Italian drinks and hors d’oeuvre.Piazza dei Signori is connected to the main streets and you can see the two most important buildings in Treviso; The Palace of the 300 and the Prefecture Palace with its tower, which was once the palace where the chief magistrate ruled under the Republic of Venice. The history of the building has always been connected to power, even today the palace is home to the City Council. The 300 Palace was built around 1185 as an assembly room for different agencies within the Treviso City Council.Through the years it was the Consuls’ Court, a place for the magistrate to deal out justice, the headquarters for the Council (which took the name the Palace of the Reason) and headquarters for the supreme Court of Civic Assizes, made by 300 members (Major Council), thus the name Palace of the 300.In the 1944 bombardments, the building was heavily damaged, frescoes and the structure were destroyed so badly that, at the time, the plan was to demolish it and rebuild. Thanks to the superintendent Ferdinando Forlati, it was decided to restore the walls and reconstruct the missing ones. The rebuilt row of bricks, on the perimetrical walls has been set back to differentiate the newer walls from the original ones.
