VILLA CIPRIANI

THE HISTORY

Built in the Palladian era, the current structure of the Villa has certainly undergone numerous changes in the eighteenth century. The first reliable information about the property dates back to 1889, when the English poet Robert Browning purchased it from Gaetano Rossi. Due to the strong influence of the poet, who was a passionate admirer of the Florentine countryside, the house takes the attitude of a noble Tuscan residence, that blends so well with the rolling hills of Asolo. The Villa was later inherited by his son, Robert Wiedemann Barrett Browning, who settled permanently in Asolo. In 1902 he sold it to the engineer Zennaro, from Treviso, for a considerable sum, who gave it to his beloved daughter as a present for her wedding with Sebastian Galanti, a gentleman belonging to a wealthy Venetian family. Villa Galanti was for many years a quiet summer residence, until the family decided to rent it to the Cimetta brothers, managers of the “Rifugio Monte Grappa” mountain resort. The brothers transformed it into an inn and gave it the name of Hotel Belvedere. In 1962 the property changed hands again: Rupert Edward Cecil Lee Guinness, Lord Iveagh – who belonged to the famous Irish family, acquired it and retained it as an Inn. This was the Guinness of the well-known beer, the businessman, the politician, the philanthropist, the generous supporter of scientific research, the University of Dublin chancellor and an important landowner in Asolo. The real turning point came when the Viscount decided to turn it into Villa Cipriani, entrusting its management to the founder of the famous Harry ‘s Bar in Venice, Giuseppe Cipriani. From this very moment the decorous Villa was transformed into a refined little jewel in the countryside. In 1974 Villa Cipriani joined Ciga Hotels, then passed to Starwood Hotels and Resorts and then finally to a private group. In 2012 it was purchased by Massimo Zanetti, owner of the group Segafredo.
